Do You Need a Resume Rewrite? Here’s How to Tell

Your resume is your gateway to landing a job, but how do you know when it needs a makeover? Here are the key signs that it's time for a rewrite—and when it’s not.

When You Need a Resume Rewrite:

Outdated or Irrelevant Content:

  • Haven’t updated it in over a year? Regularly add new achievements and skills. You may also accidentally cause employers to think you have a gap in employment that can unfortunately steer

  • Outdated contact info? Incorrect details mean missed opportunities. Keep contact info and LinkedIn current.

  • Have those dreaded and all too common gaps in employment? If you’ve had significant career changes or gaps in your employment, failing to explain these can make employers wary. One option is to use a functional or combination resume format to emphasize skills and relevant experiences. Also, briefly explain any significant career changes or gaps in a positive light and highlight any projects you worked on to keep your skills fresh.

Not Getting Interview Calls:

  • Lacking appropriate keywords? Keywords are used by BOTH humans and AI to quickly determine a fit. If it isn’t obvious you have the skills needed in a 5-second skim, you may be skipped over. Use job-specific keywords and ensure they are ATS-friendly.

  • Is the career goal a mismatch or outdated? If it still reflects old aspirations, tailor it to your current objectives. A resume that doesn't convey your career goals can confuse employers. They need to understand quickly what position you are applying for and how your experience aligns with the role.

  • Are you showing you’re a STAR? Employers look for candidates who have a proven track record of success. Simply listing job duties without showcasing achievements can make your resume blend in with the rest. Use the STAR method to clearly show how your Actions led to Results.

  • Is your resume too generic to make you seem like the unicorn they need? Sending out a generic resume that isn't tailored to the specific job can make it seem like you're not truly interested or not a good fit. You don’t have to customize your resume for each job application but highlight the most relevant experiences and skills for each type of job. You may tweak it slightly if there is a role where you see you are the person for the job.

Resume Format is Offputting:

  • Cluttered Layout: A cluttered resume with dense blocks of text and minimal white space can be difficult to read and navigate and for employers to find important information quickly. A few tips that may help are to use bullet points, headings, and ample white space to break up text and ensure your resume is easy to scan.

  • Inconsistent Formatting: Using different fonts, sizes, and styles throughout the resume can make it look unprofessional. Some may think it indicates a lack of attention to detail and can distract from your resume's content. Stick to one or two fonts, maintain consistent font sizes and styles, and ensure all sections are uniformly formatted.

  • Overly Flashy Design: Excessive colors, graphics, or creative layouts can distract from the content of your resume. They can also be seen as unprofessional, especially in more traditional industries, and may not be ATS-friendly, causing automated systems to reject your resume. Instead, opt for a clean, professional design with minimal color and graphics, focusing on readability and clarity.

  • Lack of Section Headings: Failing to use clear section headings can make it difficult for employers to locate specific information.

This makes it harder to navigate and find key details quickly and can cause important information to be overlooked. Use clear, bold headings for each section (e.g., Experience, Education, Skills) and ensure headings stand out and are easy to find.

  • Excessive Length: An excessively long resume can be daunting and may lead employers to skip over important details. It can suggest you cannot condense and prioritize information, and employers may not have the time to read through multiple pages.

Aim for a concise one to two-page resume, focusing on the most relevant information. Use bullet points and summaries to keep descriptions brief and to the point.

  • Errors and Inconsistencies: Spelling mistakes and formatting issues can ruin your first impression. Proofread meticulously and ensure you don’t have a simple typo ruin your first impression. Using AI tools or spelling and grammar checkers can make a big difference, especially if you are a non-native English speaker.

Signs You Don’t Need a Resume Rewrite YET….

You’re Getting Interviews: Focus on honing interview skills instead.

Recent Update: If your resume aligns with your goals, consider minor tweaks for each application.

Positive Feedback: If professionals or recruiters have praised it and been eager to pass it along, you should make edits when you have something new to add or if your goals have been changed.

Matched Job Requirements: If your resume matches job descriptions but you’re not getting interviews, network more or refine your cover letter.

Other Solutions if Your Resume ONLY Gets You Into Interviews:

Networking: Leverage LinkedIn and industry events.

Cover Letter: A tailored cover letter can complement your resume.

Professional Help: Consider a resume review or coaching session if unsure.
