Tip of the Week - Share Your Expertise
Alright, this may be a plug for people to write featured articles as well, but I know that many people with fantastic expertise in the LCM Network can share with others to help them in their careers.
There are a lot of benefits to sharing your expertise with others that you may have never thought of.
1. You get to flex your muscles. During your job search, you may spend so much time on the job search that your real skills go to waste. Sharing with others helps you work out those skills and may even help you better verbalize what you are great at in interviews. 2. You gain confidence. Imposter syndrome is real, and it can be exacerbated after you get a few rejection emails. Having an audience that values what you know and allows you to share your knowledge without a chance of rejection can help you to focus on those things you are great at and, hopefully, will quiet that voice that seems to focus on the areas you aren't as strong in.3. You get more clients. If you are in a role where you work directly with clients, it's important to show your skills publically. When people want to learn something, they want to know who can be trusted. If you've been on Google recently, you'll see that the first page is always sponsored ads, and even after those, you can't be sure that the results you get aren't ads in disguise. It can be overwhelming to figure out; many give up and ask a trusted friend instead of trying to sift through the sea of SEO. 3. You access the "hidden job market." From a recruiter's point of view, job applications and resumes are somewhat the same now. You can't sometimes tell if someone is a great candidate or just had their resume "optimized." For this reason (among others), many times, being at the top of people's minds as THE person to trust in a topic is how they get the role. According to multiple studies, up to 85% of jobs are filled through top-of-mind advertising, and up to 70% of jobs are never posted publicly. 3. You have allies in the job search. If you provide something of value to people, they naturally want to help you. People tend to want to repay what they see as a favor. While it should never be expected, mentees often go to great lengths to help someone they respect and admire. Conversely, the Ben Franklin effect can also come into play if you request a favor from those who come to you for support. Dale Carnegie, the oft-noted writer of How to Win Friends and Influence People, suggests that when we ask someone to do us a favor, we consider them to possess some knowledge or skill that we don't. This respect or esteem makes them more willing to continue helping because they like the feeling and, as a result, like you more. So share your knowledge broadly! Also, if you would like to do me a favor, please get in touch with me to write an article for the LCM Network on your area of expertise!
