Confession - I don’t have time, even though I make time

I don’t have time to write an article this week (In fact, I wrote it twice because of technical difficulties). Still, I also realized that this article could help job seekers better understand and maybe empathize with recruiters.

I am a recruiter—I know it’s a dirty word—and as much as I would like only to be a career matchmaker, I need to pay my bills.

That means that I need to focus on a million things at once and that as much as I love helping people individually, it can take money out of my pockets by taking away time I have to serve every job seeker better.

I have had to start saying “no” to personal requests from candidates to do a job search or give them personalized, free resume advice. This is why I have devoted so much time to sharing open roles and often can’t usher everyone through the process.

I’m not sure that as a job seeker, I understood that recruiters I worked with were not earning anything unless I was hired through them. Much of this work, whether pro bono or not, is done without compensation.

The more complicated part is that there is a lot of recruiter hate and unscrupulous recruiters who are not connecting people to jobs or may even be scamming.

That means that sometimes job seekers purposely, and maybe with good intentions or because of misunderstandings, try to “go around” recruiters. This, unfortunately, hurts everyone, including the job seeker.

This hurts job seekers because if you were referred and decided to apply directly instead, that recruiter has zero incentive to assist you, and neither does any other recruiter working on that role (or for that company, for that matter). One of the first things that will be checked is if you have already applied, and if so, that recruiter does not get a commission regardless of how much work they have put in. When job seeker doesn’t know this, they can accidentally hurt their chances while thinking they are helping themselves.

This can also hurt the chances of making that perfect match between candidates and companies. With sometimes thousands of applications, recruiters are needed to source, screen, and advocate for candidates. Unfortunately, that means an application without an advocate can be easily missed.

This hurts recruiters because if a legitimate recruiter contacts you, they may be unable to give you all the information because they fear you will try to do this “go around.” It also means that recruiters have to try to be everything to everyone, making them more likely to forget about a candidate that hasn’t been in contact. The person you think ghosted you may not have a record of your information because you went around them, so the company never followed up with them.

If you are looking for a job, please remember this. I promise that any good recruiter will work for you because, even if they aren’t a helper by nature, it’s how they get paid. You’d be amazed by how much a few kind words, some grace, and even a few light reminders about where you are in the process mean to them.

I don’t have time to help all the time, but I make time. The more you make a recruiter’s time worth it to them, the better results you will have.
