Networking Tip of the Week - Just Be Yourself
Networking is hard if you think about it as networking. This may be the most cliched advice I've ever given, but the best way to network is to be yourself. Are you an introvert, don't go to a weekend-long conference where you are in a constant state of social anxiety. If you are experiencing imposter syndrome or are not much of a self-promoter, giving a speech or presenting yourself as an "expert" probably makes all that worse. If
Does it feel fake? Do what you do naturally instead. Find "your people" and don't worry about if they aren't the CEO or the person who is the hiring manager. Honestly, the CEO or the hiring manager may not be the best person to vouch for you because 1) they don't have the time to get to know you well, and 2) they may not be the person who knows your area of expertise deeply. Are you afraid you can't add value for others: What are you great at? Who would benefit from what you know? Set up chats with people "coming up" in your field. Sometimes by sharing your experience, you discover you have more value than you thought.Afraid of asking for help? Reach out to the helpers. There are tons of people out there who love to mentor and guide. Those people see helping others as a gift to themselves. Set up chats with experts in the field who love to mentor. It's a win-win. But don't be surprised if you're called upon to do the same for others. A mix of the two? Set up coffee chats with people in the same position as you. Share your insights, be a listening ear, and ask questions that you might be too embarrassed to ask others. Want to be a helper, be helped, or connect with people who get what you're doing right now? Interested in authentically building your network? Sign up here, and I'll arrange coffee chats to get people connected. Just like dating, sometimes you need a matchmaker 😉
