Application Tip of the Week - If you can't show, tell

One of the worst things about the job search for software engineers is that many hiring managers are horrible at assessing candidates. You may hear the advice to "show, don't tell." I have (sorry) given this advice in the past, and it can be great advice if you could show it in a way that makes sense to the viewer. But there are many circumstances where you may not be able to show your code, or it may only be helpful if the person viewing it is an expert. Two types of people may be the person you have to show off to: 1) Software engineers who are aggravated that they have to take time away from coding to figure out if you are worth talking to 2) More likely, a "people" person who has to be able to translate to software engineers who don't like their time wasted

So, how do you show Tell and Show to both groups? Focus on describing projects as well as sharing links to the Repos. Just like you would for a job, use the START method. (S)ituation: Why did you choose to work on this project--what was the point? This is also a great place to show your passion and initiative.(T)ask: What did you do? If it was a project you worked on in a group, describe the whole task AND what you were personally responsible for.(A)ctions: What steps did you take to complete the task? (R)esults: What was the impact of what you/your team did? (T)ools/Tech: What expertise did you gain here? If you do a good job here, even the technical expert will not feel the need to comb through your repos. **I secretly believe that all people dislike code reviews. As a bonus, if you are under an NDA, don't have time for "side projects," or are a backend engineer who can't really "show" to a novice audience easily you can tell them instead.
