Resume Tip of the Week - Be Searchable

Finding your next role requires marketing yourself. You can fill out endless applications and customize each to try to make yourself the perfect fit, but you're probably too late. You have a much better chance of getting an ideal job by defining that job yourself and marketing for that job. The most obvious way is your resume. However, resumes are clunky and tend to be uploaded into an ATS that often isn't good at getting the right information in the right places. Resumes are not used to search for candidates; only what is scraped into the system can be used. While it may seem inconvenient to re-enter what's on your resume, it's often better than what is scraped from their internal system. Workday may seem the WORST to applicants, but a silver lining is they show you how bad these systems can be at parsing. If Workday can figure out your resume, probably any system can. Those that don't show you what they parse out probably are just as bad but leave you questioning why you didn't hear from a company. Do yourself a favor and have your "person" resume that you use that uses a pretty template (or please, create your own, so you're not stuck with an uneditable resume) but also have an ugly uploadable resume that scrapes correctly into Workday and use it for those upload-and-go sites.

The second way to be searchable is by creating a good profile on LinkedIn. It's the same advice as above, but it's already in a nice format for you, and it is so much easier to search for recruiters and even people who aren't recruiters but know how to Boolean search! You can also download your LinkedIn profile--it's pretty easily scraped if you don't want to go through the hassle of making an ATS-perfect resume and want a good enough one.

Or use their build-a-resume feature to customize it for each job type (not each job!!) easily--just click the pencil to make quick edits to the resume you download--it won't edit your LinkedIn profile.

Lastly, make yourself easy to find. An email and website with your name or "brand" is important; your LinkedIn URL should do the same. Don't know your LinkedIn URL--take a look and change it now--it's the best marketing you have for yourself to give anyone your resume quickly. Because they all start the same, give them the custom extension!

To create or edit your custom public profile URL:

1. Click the Me icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage.

2. Click View Profile.

3. Click Edit public profile & URL on the right side, then you’ll be redirected to the Public profile settings page.

4. Under Edit your custom URL on the right side, click the

5. Edit icon next to your public profile URL. Type or edit the last part of your new custom public profile URL in the text box.

6. Click Save.

My old URL was https://www.linkedin.com/in/LeahRietveld or @LeahRietveld (It actually still works!)

My newer one is https://www.linkedin.com/in/LeahCareerMatchmaker or @LeahCareerMatchmaker

But if you're not careful, you will have a hard-to-find URL with extra numbers and letters at the end, especially if your name is fairly common. Grab the best custom URL you can now if you haven't already!
