Resume Tip of the Week - The Professional Summary

So you're asked the dreaded "Tell me about yourself" question. Guess what? Your resume should do this too! (internal scream) A great professional summary helps you in a variety of ways, not only to prevent the flop sweat when asked this question.

1. It helps your target the right jobsYou may think, "Aren't I supposed to target my resume for each job?" I wouldn't, and here's why: This leads to many interviews where you come in second place. It may feel good to get those interviews, but in the long run, it wastes your time. If your professional summary needs to be reconfigured every time you apply for a job, you are probably either not a good fit for the roles you are applying to or wouldn't want those jobs. Start with what you want and use this as the bar for which jobs you spend time on.

2. It helps the person reading your resume see you in the roleIt's not enough to have the skills for a job; most employers want someone who wants the role. I may get some flack for this, but as bad as the "Why do you want this job?" question is, the "because I need a job" answer is worse. Make sure you focus on why you want this job, not why you want any job. Focus on what you want as well and not the superficial things. I'm sure the salary will be a factor, but it won't be very motivating for that to be the only thing. Really think about what is most important to you in jobs and, if you apply to the right ones, you will naturally be a good fit.

3. It saves you time in "personalizing" and writing cover lettersIf you do this well, your professional summary won't have to be rewritten over and over to make it fit each job. Sure, you may have a couple of different "types" that are modified slightly, but it's not a whole new resume each time. Also, if you do this right, this is a mini-cover letter, an outline for those jobs that for some reason demand a cover letter, and your notes for when the interviewer reads neither and asks you again.

So how do you write it? It's surprisingly simple. Find 2-3 well-written job descriptions for roles you think are your next step, not those you are a shoo-in for and not dream jobs. Then, mirror their language and align (honestly) where you can with the ideal candidate for these prototype roles. What do the JDs say they want in a candidate? Do you align with the roles held, years/depth of experience, areas of expertise, industry knowledge, or experience they want--highlight those things you consistently see among the JDs! What value do you provide?Do you have key accomplishments related to these wants and values that align with the company's mission statement? What do you want?Really think about if these jobs are fits. Be honest with yourself and answer the following: Is this the right level for you? Do you like the tech stack/tools you would use?Is it in an industry you want to work in? Do you values align?

ReflectThis will take a bit of time, but it is a good use of time. Once you have created and tweaked by looking at 3 roles, reflect. If you can answer these questions with a resounding yes, you probably are well on your way. Are you finding that there is a lot of overlap between JDs?If not, you may need to be more specific and also possibly have a few (no more than 3) different resumes if you are targeting jobs that are too different in category (e.g.; marketing & data roles or Software Engineering & Product roles)Is it easy to see how your skills fit those roles?If not, you may need to target different jobs or dive more deeply into your experience. This can be hard to career changes at times. You may need to emphasize the skills for the new career or "translate" from one industry to another. (e.g.; if you are moving from Software Engineering to Product Management, your coding skills, while valuable, will be less important than your road mapping skills. Do you feel honest and comfortable with how you are presenting yourself?If you feel you are "lying" or that you wouldn't be comfortable, it might be time for a gut check. This could be imposter syndrome; it could be that you need to build up a skill area, or it could be this might not be the right role for you. If you're petrified of public speaking, it may not be best to take a sales job; if you hate blood, maybe the switch to healthcare isn't right for you; and if you are a social butterfly that 9-5 solo WFH coding job might not be for you either.
