Why You’re Not Hearing Back from Applications—and What’s Really Going On

In today’s job market, applying through platforms like Workday can feel like throwing your resume into the void. Many job seekers are left wondering why they never hear back, even when they’re confident about their qualifications. Recently, I received a question that hit the nail on the head regarding this frustrating process, and I thought it would be valuable to share it along with my response.

Here’s a great example of one of those "Am I the only one?" questions that so many job seekers are afraid to ask publicly:

Question from 'Stuck in Workday Limbo':

Dear LCM,

I appreciate being connected with you and have found your recent posts, particularly around the candidate rejection process, very insightful, though I can't respond in public right now.

I recall you’ve mentioned frustrations with people seeking free help, so I hope this question doesn’t impose too much on your time. If you do have a moment, I’d really value your thoughts on something I’ve been experiencing.

I’ve been applying to quite a few jobs through Workday and have noticed that after submitting applications, there’s often no rejection notice, even though I’m clearly not being invited for interviews. At the same time, the same job ads keep getting reposted. Do you know if Workday has a feature to quickly reject unsuccessful applications, or is it such a time-consuming process that companies just don’t bother? (so that I will take the lack of response when seeing the job being reposted as an implied rejection.)

I wasn’t sure if it would be appropriate to ask this under one of your posts, as HR professionals might be looking at my profile and could misinterpret my inquiry as a rant. I’d really appreciate any quick insights you might have.

Best,

Stuck in Workday Limbo

Answer:

Dear Stuck,

Oh, Workday. It’s the job application platform that can feel more like a guessing game than a job search tool. You're not alone if you’ve ever felt your application went into a digital abyss. Here’s what’s happening behind the scenes and why you’re not getting the feedback you need.

How Workday Works (or Doesn’t Work) for Applications

The big secret about Workday is that it’s highly customizable, which means every company sets it up a little differently. The problem? Not every setup actually helps you, the applicant, know where you stand. Here’s a breakdown of the most common setups and what they mean for you:

The Auto-Filter Setup: Think of this as the digital gatekeeper. Companies that use this setup rely on AI to filter through resumes, looking for specific keywords or qualifications. If your resume doesn’t hit those exact terms—maybe you used “project coordination” instead of “project management”—you might be automatically rejected. These filters don’t give you feedback, so you’re left wondering if anyone ever saw your application. It’s fast, but it’s also impersonal and doesn’t give you any actionable insights.

The Manual Review with Bulk Rejection: This is the more ‘human’ approach, where recruiters try to manually review each application. However, with the volume they receive, they usually only respond to standout candidates. Everyone else ends up in a bulk rejection pile that might not get cleared out until weeks—or even months—after the role is filled. It’s not that they’re ignoring you; they just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

The “We’ll Get to It Eventually” Workflow: This is the worst of both worlds. The company technically has the tools to communicate with you but often doesn’t. You might get a rejection email at some random point in the future when they finally decide to clear out their applicant queue, but don’t hold your breath. This setup is why you see jobs reposted even though you never heard back.

The ‘Pipeline Building’ Approach: Some companies treat Workday like a talent bank, collecting applications for future roles they might have. This means they’re not actively hiring but want to keep candidates on file. Your application isn’t necessarily rejected, but it’s not being considered right now either. The job might keep getting reposted because they’re just building their pool of potential candidates for when they’re ready to hire.

The Ideal Setup: This is the rare company that’s set up Workday in a way that actually respects your time and effort. They send timely updates, let you know when you’re no longer in the running, and may even provide feedback. These companies are the unicorns of job applications, so if you find one, consider yourself lucky.

Why You’re Probably Not Hearing Back

The reality is that most companies don’t set up Workday in a way that prioritizes giving applicants clear and timely feedback. This isn’t because they’re intentionally ignoring you—it’s usually because they’re overwhelmed, understaffed, or just haven’t taken the time to build out a more thoughtful process. And yes, with so many recruiters being laid off recently, there’s often no one around to manage these systems correctly.

Is Workday Reliable Feedback?

Not really. If you receive a rejection email, that’s a clear answer, but if you don’t hear anything, it does not necessarily reflect your qualifications. It’s more about the company’s process (or lack thereof). When you see a job reposted, you can safely assume you’re not moving forward, but unfortunately, Workday won’t give you that closure directly.

The Bottom Line

When you’re applying through Workday (and most other systems), take silence as a sign to keep moving forward in your job search. Don’t waste time waiting for a system that wasn’t designed to provide you with timely feedback. The lack of response isn’t about you—it’s a flaw in the way these systems are used. So, keep applying, keep pushing forward, and don’t let Workday’s silence slow you down.

XOXO,

LCM

And by the way, thanks for letting me share this question! It’s something many job seekers struggle with but are afraid to ask.
