How to Use Boolean Searches to Find Your Perfect Job (That Others Miss)
Ever feel like every job you find on job boards is the same? Or worse, that you're competing against a million other applicants? Here's a trick for finding those hidden gems: Boolean searches on Google. This technique can help you uncover opportunities that are perfect for you but aren't plastered all over every job board.
Why Boolean Searches?
Using Boolean searches helps you filter out the noise and find job postings that align with your specific skills, location, and preferences. These positions are often less flooded with applicants since they're not easily found through conventional job board searches.
How to Build Your Boolean Search
Identify Your Key Terms: Start with the basics – your desired job title(s), industry, and any must-have skills. For example, if you're looking for a sales development role in tech, you might start with:
"Sales Development Representative" AND "tech" AND "SaaS"
Include Synonyms and Alternatives: Sometimes companies use different terms for the same role. Add variations using the "OR" operator:
("SDR" OR "Sales Development Representative") AND ("tech" OR "technology" OR "SaaS")
Filter Out Irrelevant Results: Use the "NOT" operator to exclude unwanted listings. If you want to avoid internships or entry-level roles, add:
NOT "intern" NOT "entry-level"
Location and Benefits: If location matters, include it:
("Remote" OR "New York") AND ("health insurance" OR "401(k)")
Use Quotes for Exact Phrases: Quotes keep multi-word phrases together, ensuring you get the most relevant results.
Real-World Examples
Example 1: Alex – A Marketing Specialist Seeking Remote Roles
Alex is a marketing specialist with 3+ years of experience who wants to work remotely for a company focused on B2B technology. They’re looking for roles that allow them to utilize their expertise in content marketing, SEO strategy, and lead generation.
Step 1: Build the Boolean Search
Alex starts with their main job title and adds specific keywords to target their skills and industry:
Search:
"Content Marketing Specialist" AND ("SEO strategy" OR "lead generation") AND "remote" AND ("B2B technology" OR "SaaS") NOT ("internship" OR "entry-level")
Step 2: Refine the Search
To narrow down the results further and eliminate generic job boards, Alex excludes them from their search:
Updated Search:
"Content Marketing Specialist" AND ("SEO strategy" OR "lead generation") AND "remote" AND ("B2B technology" OR "SaaS") NOT ("internship" OR "entry-level") NOT ("Indeed" OR "LinkedIn" OR "Glassdoor" OR "ZipRecruiter")
Step 3: Evaluate Results
Alex looks for job postings that:
Are directly listed on company websites
Mention tools like HubSpot or Marketo to confirm it's a good match for their skills
They find a hidden opportunity at a mid-sized SaaS company that isn’t advertised on major job boards.
Step 4: Stand Out in the Application Process
Alex checks the company’s LinkedIn page and identifies the hiring manager (Head of Content or Marketing Director). They then craft a personalized email mentioning a recent blog post the company published, showing they’re familiar with their brand.
Example 2: Taylor – An Experienced Backend Developer Searching for FinTech Roles in Chicago
Taylor is an experienced backend developer with 5+ years in Python and AWS, looking for a FinTech role in Chicago. They prefer a hybrid or remote position and want to work with a company that focuses on microservices and RESTful APIs.
Step 1: Build the Boolean Search
Taylor focuses on their preferred job titles, skills, and industry:
Search:
"Backend Developer" AND ("Python" AND "AWS" AND "microservices" AND "RESTful API") AND ("FinTech" OR "financial technology") AND ("Chicago" OR "remote")
Step 2: Refine the Search
To filter out the usual job boards, Taylor adds additional exclusions and further specifies their preferences:
Updated Search:
"Backend Developer" AND ("Python" AND "AWS" AND "microservices" AND "RESTful API") AND ("FinTech" OR "financial technology") AND ("Chicago" OR "remote") NOT ("Glassdoor" OR "Indeed" OR "ZipRecruiter")
Step 3: Evaluate Results
Taylor examines job listings that:
Mention specific tools or technologies like Django, Flask, or Kubernetes
Come from company career pages or smaller job boards specializing in tech
They discover a FinTech startup’s career page with an opening that aligns perfectly with their experience.
Step 4: Stand Out in the Application Process
Taylor reaches out to a mutual LinkedIn connection who works in FinTech, asking for an introduction to someone at the company. They then tailor their cover letter to emphasize how their experience in building microservices would be valuable to the backend team.
By using these techniques, both Alex and Taylor can uncover positions tailored to their skills and experience, bypassing the crowded job boards to find opportunities where they stand out.
